The Diversity Tree
The Diversity Tree was a community art project run by artists Kate Gorringe-Smith and Julie Milton at the Melbourne's 2016 Diversity Festival in Federation Square, the culmination of Cultural Diversity Week 2016.
'Cultural Diversity Week brings together Victorians from all walks of life to promote community harmony and celebrate the many cultures that make our state so vibrant. Coordinated by the Victorian Multicultural Commission, the celebration extends over one week and coincides with the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21 March. Cultural Diversity Week 2016 - 'Together we stand in harmony' - was held from 12-20 March.'
To contribute to the Diversity Tree, festival attendees were invited to contribute a link – to draw or wrote on it first – to a growing installation in the trees at Fed. Square: ‘You are invited to make a link to add to the growing artwork in our Diversity Tree. Make one link or more, choose a colour, draw a picture or write a story and we will add it to the tree to show how we are all connected!’ The growing work represented how we all work together to create our wonderful multi-faceted community – that each link is equally important to the whole. The different materials represent the diversity within the community.
The Diversity Tree was made possible through Multicultural Arts Victoria.
